Frequently Asked Questions

What is an asbestos survey

An asbestos survey is an inspection carried out to identify the presence of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) in a building or structure. Typically to a building that was built before 2000.

Do I need and asbestos survey and which one?

Whether or not you need an asbestos survey depends on several factors, including the type of building you own or occupy, its age, and the type of work being done. Here are some situations where you might need an asbestos survey:

1. If the building was constructed before 2000:

  • Asbestos was commonly used in construction materials before 2000. If your building was built before this time, there may be asbestos present within materials such as insulation, flooring, roofing, or pipe lagging. An asbestos survey will help identify and assess the risk of these materials.

2. If you are planning to carry out any renovation or demolition work:

  • Before any refurbishment, renovation, or demolition work, a refurbishment or demolition survey is required to ensure that asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are identified and removed safely to avoid exposure during work.

3. If you own or manage a non-domestic property:

  • Management surveys are often required for non-domestic properties (commercial buildings, schools, offices, etc). These surveys ensure that any asbestos in the building is monitored and safely managed to prevent exposure to workers and visitors.

4. If you are unsure whether asbestos is present:

  • If you're unsure whether asbestos-containing materials exist in your building, it’s always best to get a survey done. A management survey will provide clarity on any asbestos-related risks and give you guidance on how to manage it.

5. If you're buying or selling a property:

  • For the safety of all parties involved, it’s a good idea to have an asbestos survey carried out when buying or selling a property, particularly if the building is older or you're planning any renovations.

If any of these apply to you, it's highly recommended that you have an asbestos survey conducted to ensure safety and compliance with health and safety regulations. If you're still unsure, it’s always best to consult a licensed asbestos professional to assess your situation.

What is an asbestos management plan?

An asbestos management plan (AMP) is a document that outlines how asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) in a building or structure will be managed to ensure the safety of those occupying or working in that space. It is required for buildings where asbestos has been identified, particularly in non-domestic properties, to comply with health and safety regulations - CAR-2012.

The purpose of the plan is to minimize the risk of asbestos exposure by detailing how the identified asbestos will be monitored, maintained, and if necessary, removed. It helps ensure that asbestos is managed in a safe and controlled manner.

Do you analyse the samples?

As we do not yet hold the required certification and liscences, we do not analyse the samples. However, we do use a UKAS accredited labatory for all sample analysis to ensure we work to the highest possible standards.
